It has always been a point of debate if high school pupils
should contribute to the lesser privileged population in society through
volunteer services. I strongly agree with that side of the debate which
supports this notion of making social work a compulsory curriculum in high
school. This essay will first look at
building a sense of appreciation in young adults and then will elaborate
on how this activity leads into the overall scheme in becoming an added
resource contributing towards a nation’s growth.
It is imperative that children from the privileged corner of
society look through the life of people who are less fortune, so that they
understand how blessed they are and feel the responsibility towards community. Teens
who get everything easily sometimes don’t understand how difficult life can be
and having them meet people who struggle at almost every step of their lives, reveals
just how challenging the real world is. To illustrate this, my daughter’s
school contributes for social causes and encourages their students to go out of
their comfort zones and add value to other’s life. As a result, I have noticed
remarkable changes in my daughter, e.g. her respect for food, her sense of contentment,
her awakened compassion for fellow beings and the overall disposition of virtues
like; love, kindness and charity.
We live in country with an exceedingly large population and with
insufficient assets and the government can only do so much with these limited
resources. Even with a plethora of NGOs (Non-Government Organizations) working
for and with the unprivileged community, it is not enough to fulfill their needs.
This idea of encouraging compulsory pro bono activities as a high
school program can really change the landscape of our material and social capital.
For instance, by having thousands of institutions joining hands with community
service arms of the government or even operating independently can ensure a
widespread coverage across the country which can then consequently create the
additional physical and cognitive properties a developing nation requires.
In conclusion, to make our children learn the importance of life in addition to
being able to discern the right fruits; and to really become a resource for the
country at the same time, it is highly suggested to make social work a must in
high schools.
