It is argued that social welfare should be a mandatory
part of secondary school curriculum. This essay agrees with the statement for
it will generate the feeling of compassion in students. It will discuss how
community work will hone the social skills of students and lead to a better
work environment for them in the times to come.
Social skills are not only developed by interacting with
fellow mates but also when the students engage in various activities at school.
As it is a widely accepted postulation; human beings are social creatures and thus
require human interaction. Indeed, unpaid community service boosts the skills
of students. For example, I personally volunteered at an NGO for the disabled
for four weeks and garnered much praise from my mentor for the commendable
initiatives I undertook to roll out sessions that perpetuated further learning
on the advantages of individual interactions, and this personally facilitated
my own scholarship which I otherwise would have continued to be oblivion of.
‘Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn’, these words by Benjamin Franklin hit the bull’s eye in terms of engaging the pupils in unpaid community work. Voluntary service leads to both the involvement of the students and the development of their skills which would consequently promote their growth in a professional working environment. Employers scan CVs on the basis of the candidate’s service to society. Ergo, a reasonable volume of honorary community work during high school will create better opportunities for students in the future. For example, Amazon and Infosys measure their candidates’ social quotient from the amounts of hours dedicated to unpaid service which subsequently translates into a better appraisal.
In conclusion, adolescents should be made to volunteer for
the unpaid community service as a part of their school curriculum because it
will help them understand the importance of empathy and kindness and encourage
them to work ethically in the future.
