Many employers are now offering their
employees the option to work from home. As a result, employees will have much
more flexible working hours in the future. Is this a positive or negative
development?
Many companies these days are seen presenting
their workforce with the choice of working from home and such a trend in the working
lifestyle will open up and offer employees the elasticity required to balance
work and life in the future. This essay will elaborate on two points; The main
advantage being increased productivity and the main disadvantage being the
difficulty in focusing on work.
Uninterrupted and away for the office web of formal
and informal interjections affords an employee with the opportunity of
increasing their productivity. This means that a person has more time to focus
on his task at hand versus having to worry about the constant interjections
experienced while working in an office setting. For example, it is common for
boxers to go to camps at such a place where they are far from the temptations
of a convenient life and as far away as possible from any kind of entertainment
so that they increase their training productivity. The result of this kind of isolation
was amazing. Former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury on his rematch with Deontay
Wilder did exactly this and the outcome stunned the entire boxing world. He knocked
out his opponent devastatingly in just three rounds.
However, on the other hand, such options can
be a bane. With home doubling up as an office has its pronounced shares of distress.
To explain this further, it means that with family members around, there’s
always bound to be noise and disturbances arising from the various activities
that go on in a regular house. From children suddenly bursting into the room
and sometimes even screaming in delight and sometimes even in despair. For
instance, during the lock-down across the world at various cities; a mayor was
being interviewed by a news channel and his set looked like a perfect office till
his children came darting in. This resulted in an awkward setting where he was
trying to mind them while at the same time attempting to answer the question albeit
the governess following through to quickly take them out of the room. Consequently,
the interview didn’t go as it was going, he had to excuse himself to tent to his
bawling children.
In conclusion, it is quite apparent that work
from home is like the two sides of a coin. It has its fair share of positives
and negatives. As much as there may be naysayers, with a little planning, disciple
and segregation, working from home is a very productive option for employees
socially and professionally. The merits convincingly outweigh the demerits.
